When Board Members Gather

We had a fantastic opportunity in Butte two weeks ago during the Power Up conference for a small group discussion with some board volunteers. The group met over breakfast on our last day and talked about their concerns, challenges, and what’s on their minds.

Some of the discussion was on planning for CEO succession, reaching younger borrowers, consent agendas, and how to recruit new board members. We also talked about the role of the credit union in serving the underserved, and directors shared what made them get involved in the first place. Another interesting talking point was how to incorporate education and training for board members into the meeting  — one board member shared that they do their training before the actual meeting starts. It is a shift in strategy, and one others at the table took note of.

Regardless of the conversation or topic, it is clear that directors value the chance to form a community where they can hear from their peers and take away ideas and best practices. I will continue to use this blog to discuss the above topics and provide related resources you can use. I also expect to do a couple of webinars a year specifically for board members (look for an announcement soon on the next one).

It is my pleasure to get to meet with credit union board members and to have a platform to share ideas and resources. Don’t ever hesitate to reach out to me with your own thoughts!
