Stories Make an Impact

During the recent Governmental Affairs Conference (GAC) in Washington, D.C., one thing was clear — credit unions should focus on telling their stories. The discussion there was on how to help lawmakers understand the importance of your role in communities and how much your credit union’s team does every day to assist members in improving their financial lives. When people understand our “People Helping People” mission and provide examples of real impact, it makes a difference!
One suggestion I heard discussed from a panelist at GAC really resonated with me, though. It was suggested that your credit union should use a story about how your credit union helped a member when you are working to attract new board members. What better way to showcase the work they could have a role in than to give a specific example?
I love the idea and hope the next time you are ready to put a blurb in the newsletter or post a social media ad asking for volunteers, you’ll think about engaging your credit union team to tell an impact story. It could make all the difference in helping someone see the benefit of a few volunteer hours a month to change lives!
Not sure where to start? Your frontline staff and lenders often have great examples of really helping someone who needed it, and here are a couple of articles on credit union storytelling that might also spark ideas:
