NCUA Proposes Covering Dependent Care

February 25, 2026 7:30 am

By Donya Parrish, MCU VP Risk Management

The NCUA recently took a step to reverse a long-standing stance and proposed allowing for the reimbursement of reasonable child care expenses for volunteer board members. In fact, the proposal not only includes child care — it includes care for all dependents. With so many people in the “sandwich generation” responsible for both elderly parents and young children, the change may be a welcome one.

The proposed rule would enable federal credit union boards to establish policies that allow for the payment of reasonable dependent care costs incurred by volunteer officials while attending board meetings and performing their official credit union duties. It is “designed to reduce barriers to volunteer service for individuals with dependent care responsibilities and help federal credit unions to adopt family-friendly policies,” according to the agency press release.
