Every Credit Union Has a Story!

If you completed our Montana Credit Union Philosophy Certification Program recently (and if you haven’t — why not?), you learned a little credit union history. It may have sparked a need to know more about your own credit union’s history — 0r you may have wondered “what ever happened to the ___ credit union that used to be…” Either way, we have a tool for you to consider!
The FFIEC (Federal Financial Institutions Examination Council) National Information Center has a repository of financial data and information collected by the Federal Reserve System. My favorite feature in it is to look up a credit union’s history, including current or past institutions. That might include when the credit union was chartered, a name change or two, a change from a federal to a state charter, a merger with another credit union, moving the headquarters, and milestone events of that nature.
Start by inputting the name and city of the institution you are researching. If you click the “More Options” feature in the lower right corner, you can see the option to choose either “active” or “inactive” institutions and to adjust the Identifier to “NCUA” (for example) and Institution Group to “Credit Unions”. From there, you search and find the institution. Once you click on the name of it, you can choose the History tab and see the information you seek.
Give it a try and see what you may or may already know about your own local credit union history!
