Practicing and Prioritizing Self-Care for Your Leaders

September 17, 2025 7:30 am

The Illinois Credit Union League President wrote an article recently that should be required reading for all of us. Libby Calderone notes in Balance in the C-suite: Prioritizing self-care for optimal performance that “as leaders within the credit union movement, we are conscientious and diligent about supporting the members and communities we serve. How we handle stress as leaders not only affects our well-being, but also that of our teams and members.”

Whether you are a CEO or a credit union board member, you have both yourself and others to consider when protecting mental health and reducing stress, while also meeting deadlines and achieving strategic objectives. Focusing on self-care might even set the tone for a company-wide shift that benefits the employees and members. She covered some options within the broader categories to encourage leaders to set boundaries, practice resilience, share responsibility with their team, and reach out for support. I found her article valuable and helpful, and I hope you do too!

Also, remember that the MCUL Trust medical coverages have a couple of benefits that are related to mental health, which make mental health providers more accessible at a lower cost for employees.

  1. The Trust offers an EAP (employee assistance program) backed by Curalinc that is available to all employees if the credit union offers the medical Trust coverage. Currently, this product offers up to 6 free counseling sessions to the employee/dependents living with them for any subject, in addition to a comprehensive website with multiple tools.
  2. The Trust is also paired with Teladoc Mental Health, which is available at little to no cost for the medically covered member only. Both products provide access 24/7/365.

If you’re currently enrolled in Trust medical and ancillary benefits, open enrollment notifications will be coming out shortly. Or, if you’re interested in a quote, please reach out to Mara Rayner or Dara Anderson. They can provide you with details of the items needed to give your credit union a quote.
