Pause. Ask. Protect. Elder Financial Abuse Recognition

Pause. Ask. Protect. In recognition of Elder Abuse Awareness Month, we’re sharing four blogs in June to help you Pause. Ask. Protect. to keep yourself and your family members safe.

Elder financial abuse is more common than many people realize, and it’s often happening quietly — sometimes right in our own neighborhoods.

Unfortunately, older adults are the primary target for scammers, with victims aged 60 or over reporting over $7.7 billion in losses. These numbers are staggering, but they only tell part of the story.

What makes this issue especially troubling is how these situations often unfold. Elder financial exploitation doesn’t usually happen in one big event; instead, it often builds gradually, sometimes over months, before anyone notices. Even more concerning, the person responsible is frequently someone the victim knows and trusts — like a friend, family member, or caregiver.

So, how can we help protect ourselves and our loved ones? One simple approach can make a big difference: Pause. Ask. Protect.

  • Pause. If something feels urgent or unusual, take a moment. High-pressure tactics are a common tool for scammers and exploiters.
  • Ask. If anything feels off, talk it through with someone you trust or reach out to your credit union. A quick conversation can help you avoid a costly mistake.
  • Protect. Never share your personal or financial information unless you are certain it’s safe.

At credit unions, protecting your financial well-being is a top priority. Credit union staff are trained to spot red flags and unusual account activity, and they are always ready to support you if you have questions or concerns. Many credit unions also offer educational resources and community seminars on preventing fraud and financial abuse, empowering you and your family with the knowledge you need to stay safe.

Remember: if something doesn’t feel right, trust your instincts and reach out for help. Your credit union is here to help you protect what matters most, so you can feel confident in every financial decision you make.
