MCUCD and Don’t Tax My Credit Union

Don't Tax My Credit Union! The Don’t Tax My Credit Union! campaign is a perfect opportunity to focus on the programs credit unions provide through MCUCD or individually to hard-working families helping them to attain financial equality.

Credit unions promote economic well being under the philosophy of “people before profit.” The credit union mission has always been to ensure financial choices at lower costs to members, who are often people underserved by banks.

Members represent 40% of all Americans, yet only 6% of the assets in financial institutions, and yet big banks still want Congress to raise taxes and impose new fees on credit unions.

We have to make sure that Congress doesn't listen!

Don’t Tax My Credit Union is a national campaign dedicated to ensuring Congress doesn’t make changes to the national tax code and raise taxes on 96 million credit union members — 387,000 of those are in Montana. The effort is underway because of discussions amongst lawmakers right now to take away the tax-exempt status credit unions have held since the 1930s.

This tax-exempt status is critical because credit unions are member-owned, non-profit organizations overseen by volunteer boards, dedicated to improving the financial well-being of their communities through the cooperative principles.

In no way do credit unions operate likes banks.

We urge you to contact your representatives and explain the ways credit unions provide services with low to no fees, financial education, free tax help, and matched-savings accounts, which improves society as a whole and therefore should not be taxed like banks.
